Os erros que a Apple iria cometer quando lançasse seu maior equívoco (para alguns concorrentes), o iPhone, foram retratados nesse artigo bem curioso.

O desdém inicial pelo iPhone
Muitos se arriscaram na época a prever o futuro catastrófico (SIC) do iPhone. “Especialistas” que queimaram a língua por não verem o futuro chegando.
O iPhone era tão diferente de tudo até ali que muitas mudanças foram difíceis de absorver. A falta completa de um teclado físico era uma das críticas mais usadas pelos detratores, além do fato dele ser “grande” para o padrão da época.
O CEO da Palm chegou a dizer na época “Os caras dos computadores não vão agora chegar e mostrar como se faz. Não é só chegar e fazer“.
Já um outro analista do Bloomberg não acreditava que o iPhone duraria muito tempo:
“O iPhone não é nada mais do que um brinquedo de luxo que vai apelar para alguns loucos por gadgets. Em termos de seu impacto sobre a indústria, o iPhone é menos relevante. É pouco provável que a Apple faça algum impacto neste mercado. A Apple vai vender um pouco para alguns de seus fãs, mas o iPhone não vai marcar a indústria a longo prazo.”
Michael Kanellos, da CNET, foi ainda mais categórico, prevendo o fracasso total do aparelho:
“A Apple está se preparando para lançar um novo telefone… E ele vai fracassar. As vendas deste telefone até irão disparar no começo, mas as coisas vão se acalmar e o telefone da Apple vai tomar o seu lugar nas prateleiras com as câmeras de vídeo aleatórias, telefones celulares, roteadores sem fio e outros possíveis acertos. Quando o iPod surgiu no final de 2001, ele resolveu alguns problemas importantes com MP3 players. Infelizmente para a Apple, são problemas que não existem no setor de telefonia. Os telefones celulares não são desajeitados, dispositivos inadequados. Em vez disso, eles são muito bons. Muito bons.”
Nem mesmo a Microsoft estava acreditando no que estava acontecendo. O diretor de marketing da empresa, Richard Sprague, comentou na época:
“Eu não posso acreditar nesta atenção toda que está sendo dada para o iPhone … Eu só tenho que saber quem vai querer uma coisa dessas (além do fanático religioso). Então, por favor, favorite este post e volte daqui dois anos para ver os resultados da minha previsão : eu prevejo que o iPhone não vai vender nem perto dos 10 milhões [de unidades] que Jobs prevê para 2008.”
E claro, não podemos esquecer do comentário que ficou na história, vindo da boca do então presidente da Microsoft, Steve Ballmer:

The initial disdain for the iPhone
Many at the time dared to predict the catastrophic (SIC) future of the iPhone. “Experts” who ate their words for not seeing the future coming.
The iPhone was so different from everything before it that many changes were difficult to absorb. The complete lack of a physical keyboard was one of the most common criticisms from detractors, besides the fact that it was “big” by the standards of the time.
The CEO of Palm even said at the time: “The computer guys aren’t just going to come in now and show us how it’s done. It’s not just about showing up and doing it.”
Another Bloomberg analyst didn’t believe the iPhone would last long:
“The iPhone is nothing more than a luxury toy that will appeal to a few gadget freaks. In terms of its impact on the industry, the iPhone is less relevant. Apple is unlikely to make any impact in this market. Apple will sell a few to some of its fans, but the iPhone will not make its mark on the industry in the long term.”
Michael Kanellos of CNET was even more categorical, predicting the device’s total failure:
“Apple is getting ready to launch a new phone… And it will fail. Sales of this phone will even surge at first, but things will calm down and Apple’s phone will take its place on shelves with random video cameras, cell phones, wireless routers, and other possible successes. When the iPod emerged in late 2001, it solved some important problems with MP3 players. Unfortunately for Apple, these are problems that don’t exist in the phone industry. Cell phones are not clunky, inadequate devices. Instead, they are very good. Very good.”
Not even Microsoft believed what was happening. The company’s marketing director, Richard Sprague, commented at the time:
“I can’t believe all this attention being given to the iPhone… I just have to know who would want such a thing (besides the religious fanatic). So, please, favorite this post and come back in two years to see the results of my prediction: I predict that the iPhone will not sell anywhere near the 10 million [units] that Jobs predicts for 2008.”
And of course, we can’t forget the comment that made history, coming from the mouth of the then Microsoft president, Steve Ballmer:

Despite the entity releasing a statement claiming nothing involves them, the Federal Police confirmed that the operation conducted searches at the entity and at the homes of Samir Xaud, Renildo Lima, and federal deputy Helena da Asatur (regarding vote buying in Roraima).
