Hoje a Igreja Católica celebra um Doutor da Igreja de imensa espiritualidade e serviço ao próximo: Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, considerado “Padroeiro dos confessores e moralistas”.

Origens
Afonso de Ligório nasceu no dia 27 de setembro de 1696, em Nápoles, na Itália. Era filho de pais cristãos, ricos e nobres, que deram-lhe todas as condições de estudo acadêmicos como religiosos.
Com 16 anos, doutorou-se em Direito Civil e Eclesiástico, atendendo os ricos e pobres com a mesma igualdade. Entretanto, após anos de profissão, perdeu uma causa de grande repercussão social por exclusiva interferência política.
Das leis humanas às leis de Deus
A situação ocasionou-lhe uma forte desilusão moral e decidiu, então, abandonar tudo e seguir a vida religiosa. A princípio, o pai não concordou, mas, quando viu Afonso renunciar à herança e aos títulos de nobreza, aceitou sua decisão.
Concluiu os estudos de teologia e foi ordenado sacerdote aos trinta anos, em 1726, dedicando o seu sacerdócio aos mais pobres.
Fundação da Congregação do Santíssimo Redentor
Em 1730, decidiu de deixar Nápoles para se retirar para o eremitério beneditino da Vila dos Escravos, perto de Caserta. Ali, fundou a Congregação do Santíssimo Redentor, destinada, exclusivamente, à pregação aos pobres, às regiões de população abandonada, sob a forma de missões e retiros. Essa experiência teve um sucesso imediato em Nápoles, a ponto de atingir cerca de 30 mil inscritos para serem educados. Ele mesmo viajou por quase todo o sul da Itália pregando a Palavra de Deus e a devoção a Maria.
Em 1762, com 66 anos, Afonso Maria foi nomeado Bispo de Santa Águeda dos Godos, em Benevento. Após 15 anos, renunciou o cargo por problemas de saúde.
Páscoa
Faleceu com 91 anos, em 1787, em Nocera dei Pagani, Itália. Deixou um acervo de cento e vinte livros e tratados. Entre os mais célebres, estão: “Teologia moral”; “Glórias de Maria”, “Visitas ao SS. Sacramento”; além do “Tratado sobre a oração”.
Santo Afonso Maria de Liguori foi canonizado em 1839 e proclamado Doutor da Igreja, por Pio IX, em 1871. Em 1950, Pio XII o proclamou “Padroeiro celestial de todos os confessores e moralistas”.

FEAST OF SAINT ALPHONSUS MARIA DE LIGUORI, FOUNDER OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER
Origins
Alphonsus de Liguori was born on September 27, 1696, in Naples, Italy. He was the son of wealthy and noble Christian parents, who provided him with every opportunity for academic and religious study.
At 16, he earned his doctorate in Civil and Ecclesiastical Law, serving the rich and the poor with equal fairness. However, after years of practicing law, he lost a highly publicized case due to political interference.
From Human Laws to God’s Laws
This situation caused him a profound moral disillusionment, and he decided to abandon everything and pursue a religious life. Initially, his father disagreed, but when he saw Alphonsus renounce his inheritance and titles of nobility, he accepted his decision.
He completed his theological studies and was ordained a priest at the age of thirty in 1726, dedicating his priesthood to the poorest.
Foundation of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer
In 1730, he decided to leave Naples and withdraw to the Benedictine hermitage of Villa degli Schiavi, near Caserta. There, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, intended exclusively for preaching to the poor and to people in abandoned regions, through missions and retreats. This endeavor was an immediate success in Naples, attracting about 30,000 people to be educated. He himself traveled throughout almost all of southern Italy, preaching the Word of God and devotion to Mary.
In 1762, at the age of 66, Alphonsus Maria was appointed Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti, in Benevento. After 15 years, he resigned from the position due to health problems.
Passing
He died at the age of 91, in 1787, in Nocera dei Pagani, Italy. He left behind a collection of one hundred and twenty books and treatises. Among the most famous are: “Moral Theology,” “The Glories of Mary,” “Visits to the Blessed Sacrament,” and the “Treatise on Prayer.”
Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was canonized in 1839 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. In 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed him the “heavenly Patron of all confessors and moralists.”
