SÃO JOSÉ CUPERTINO
O santo de hoje nasceu num estábulo, a exemplo de Jesus, em Cupertino, no reino de Nápoles, a 17 de junho de 1603. Filho de pais pobres, tornou-se um pobre que enriqueceu a Igreja com sua santidade de vida.
José quando menino era a tal ponto limitado na inteligência que pouco aprendia e apresentava dificuldades nos trabalhos manuais, porém, de maneira extraordinária progrediu no campo da oração e da caridade.
São José foi despedido de dois conventos franciscanos por não conseguir corresponder aos ofícios e serviços comuns. Ele, porém, não desistia de recomendar sua causa a Santíssima Virgem, pela qual tinha sido anteriormente curado de uma grave e misteriosa enfermidade.
O poder da oração levou São José de Cupertino para o convento franciscano e ao sacerdócio, precisando para isso que a Graça suprisse as falhas da natureza. Desde então, manifestavam-se nele, fenômenos místicos acompanhados de curas milagrosas, que o tornou conhecido e procurado em toda a região.
Dentre os acontecimentos espirituais o que muito se destacou foi o êxtase, que consiste naquele estado de elevação da alma ao plano sobrenatural, onde a pessoa fica momentaneamente desapegada dos sentidos e entregue totalmente numa contemplação daquilo que é Divino.
São José era tão sensível a esta realidade espiritual, que isto acontecia durante a Santa Missa, quando rezava com os Salmos e em outros momentos escolhidos por Deus; somente num dos conventos onde viveu 17 anos, seus irmãos presenciaram cerca de 70 êxtases do santo. A fama das curas milagrosas se alastrava como uma epidemia, exaltando a imaginação popular, e obrigando o Frei José, a ser transferido de convento para convento. Mas, os fenômenos se repetiam e o povo lhe tirava todo o sossego.
Como na vida da maioria dos santos não faltaram línguas caluniosas que, interpretando mal esta popularidade atribuiu-lhe poderes demoníacos aos seus milagres e êxtases, ao ponto de denunciarem o santo Frei ao Tribunal da Inquisição de Nápoles. O processo terminou reconhecendo a inocência do religioso, impondo-lhe, porém, a reclusão obrigatória e a transferência para conventos afastados.
Depois de sofrer muito e de diversas maneiras, predisse o lugar e o tempo de sua morte, que aconteceu em 18 de setembro de 1663, contando com sessenta anos de humilde testemunho e docilidade aos Carismas do Espírito Santo.
Foi beatificado por Bento XIV em 1753 e canonizado por Clemente XIII em 1767.

SAINT JOSEPH OF CUPERTINO
Today’s saint was born in a stable, following the example of Jesus, in Cupertino, in the kingdom of Naples, on June 17, 1603. The son of poor parents, he became a poor man who enriched the Church with his holy life.
As a boy, Joseph was so intellectually limited that he learned very little and had difficulties with manual labor. However, he made extraordinary progress in the fields of prayer and charity.
Saint Joseph was dismissed from two Franciscan convents for not being able to fulfill common duties and services. He, however, did not give up on commending his cause to the Blessed Virgin, by whom he had previously been cured of a serious and mysterious illness.
The power of prayer led Saint Joseph of Cupertino to the Franciscan convent and to the priesthood, requiring that Grace supply the failures of nature. From then on, mystical phenomena accompanied by miraculous healings manifested in him, which made him known and sought after throughout the region.
Among the spiritual events, what stood out the most was ecstasy, which consists of that state of elevation of the soul to the supernatural plane, where the person is momentarily detached from the senses and completely given over to a contemplation of what is Divine.
Saint Joseph was so sensitive to this spiritual reality that this would happen during the Holy Mass, when he prayed with the Psalms, and at other moments chosen by God; in just one of the convents where he lived for 17 years, his brothers witnessed about 70 ecstasies of the saint. The fame of the miraculous healings spread like an epidemic, exalting the popular imagination, and forcing Friar Joseph to be transferred from convent to convent. But the phenomena would repeat themselves, and the people took away all his peace.
As in the lives of most saints, there was no lack of slanderous tongues that, misinterpreting this popularity, attributed demonic powers to his miracles and ecstasies, to the point of denouncing the holy Friar to the Tribunal of the Inquisition in Naples. The process ended by recognizing the innocence of the religious, but imposing on him mandatory reclusion and transfer to remote convents.
After suffering a lot and in various ways, he foretold the place and time of his death, which happened on September 18, 1663, counting sixty years of humble witness and docility to the Charisms of the Holy Spirit.
He was beatified by Benedict XIV in 1753 and canonized by Clement XIII in 1767.
