A Igreja Católica festeja hoje Santo Estevão, considerado primeiro mártire do Catolicismo e um dos primeiros diáconos da Igreja.

SANTO ESTEVÃO
Nos capítulos 6 e 7 dos Atos dos Apóstolos encontramos um longo relato sobre o martírio de Estêvão, que é um dos sete primeiros Diáconos nomeados e ordenados pelos Apóstolos. Santo Estêvão é chamado de Protomártir, ou seja, ele foi o primeiro mártir de toda a história católica. O seu martírio ocorreu entre o ano 31 e 36 da era cristã. Eis a descrição, tirada do livro dos Atos dos Apóstolos:
“Estêvão, porém, cheio de graça e poder, fazia prodígios e grandes sinais entre o povo. Levantaram-se então alguns da sinagoga, chamados dos Libertos e dos Cirenenses e dos Alexandrinos, e dos da Cicília e da Ásia e começaram a discutir com Estêvão, e não puderam resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito com que ele falava. Subornaram então alguns homens que disseram: ‘Ouvimo-lo proferir palavras blasfematórias contra Moisés e contra Deus’. E amotinaram o povo e os Anciãos e Escribas e apoderaram-se dele e conduziram-no ao Sinédrio; e apresentaram falsas testemunhas que disseram: ‘Este homem não cessa de proferir palavras contra o Lugar Santo e contra a Lei; pois, ouvimo-lo dizer que Jesus, o Nazareno, destruirá este Lugar e mudará os usos que Moisés nos legou’. E todos os que estavam sentados no Sinédrio, tendo fixado os olhares sobre ele, viram o seu rosto como o rosto de um anjo”.
Num longo discurso, Estêvão evoca a história do povo de Israel, terminando com esta veemente apóstrofe:
“‘Homens de cerviz dura, incircuncisos de coração e de ouvidos, resistis sempre ao Espírito Santo, vós sois como os vossos pais. Qual dos profetas não perseguiram os vossos pais, e mataram os que prediziam a vinda do Justo que vós agora traístes e assassinastes? Vós que recebestes a Lei promulgada pelo ministério dos anjos e não a guardastes’. Ao ouvirem estas palavras, exasperaram-se nos seus corações e rangiam os dentes contra ele. Mas ele, cheio do Espírito Santo, tendo os olhos fixos no céu, viu a glória de Deus e Jesus que estava à direita de Deus e disse: ‘Vejo os céus abertos e o Filho do homem que está à direita de Deus’. E levantando um grande clamor, fecharam os olhos e, em conjunto, lançaram-se contra ele. E lançaram-no fora da cidade e apedrejaram-no. E as testemunhas depuseram os seus mantos aos pés de um jovem, chamado Saulo. E apedrejavam Estêvão que invocava Deus e dizia: ‘Senhor Jesus, recebe o meu espírito’. Depois, tendo posto os joelhos em terra, gritou em voz alta: ‘Senhor, não lhes contes este pecado’. E dizendo isto, adormeceu”.

SAINT STEPHEN
In chapters 6 and 7 of the Acts of the Apostles, we find a long account of the martyrdom of Stephen, who is one of the first seven Deacons named and ordained by the Apostles. Saint Stephen is called the Protomartyr, meaning he was the first martyr in all of Catholic history. His martyrdom occurred between the years 31 and 36 of the Christian era. Here is the description, taken from the book of the Acts of the Apostles:
“Now Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Then some men of the synagogue called the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and men from Cilicia and Asia) stood up and began to dispute with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. Then they secretly instigated men who said, ‘We have heard him utter blasphemous words against Moses and against God.’ And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the Council. And they set up false witnesses who said, ‘This man never ceases to speak words against thi1s holy place and the law, for we2 heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.’ And all who sat in the Council, gazing at him, saw that his face was like the face of an angel.”
In a long speech, Stephen evokes the history of the people of Israel, ending with this vehement apostrophe:
“‘You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed 3and murdered, you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.’ Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. But he, full of the Holy Spirit, 4gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him. Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spir5it.’ And falling to his knees he cried out w6ith a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ And when he had said this, he fell asleep7.”
