HISTÓRIA DE SANTO INÁCIO DE LOYOLA
Íñigo (Inácio) López nasceu na localidade de Loyola, atual município de Azpeitia, próximo a San Sebastian, no País Basco, na Espanha, em 1491. De família rica, o caçula de treze irmãos, decidiu dedicar-se à espiritualidade aos 26 anos, quando abandonou a carreira militar, voltando a estudar para melhor abraçar a vocação descoberta de evangelizador. De 1522 a 1523 escreveu os Exercícios Espirituais, baseados em sua experiência de encontro com Deus, através de reflexões que levam em conta sua própria humanidade. Os Exercícios Espirituais se tornaram, mais tarde, um reconhecido método de evangelização para os católicos.
Em 1534, com mais seis companheiros, entre eles Francisco Xavier, funda a Companhia de Jesus, que recebe a aprovação do Papa Paulo III em 1540, quando Inácio é escolhido para o cargo de superior-geral da ordem.
Os jesuítas se espalharam pelo mundo. No Brasil, tiveram importante papel na conversão e proteção de indígenas durante a época colonial, além de contribuírem decisivamente para o ensino com colégios em diversos pontos do território nacional que hoje integram a Rede Jesuíta de Educação.
Santo Inácio morreu em Roma, em 31 de julho de 1556, aos 65 anos. Em 1922, o Papa Pio XI declarou Santo Inácio padroeiro de Retiros Espirituais.

HISTORY OF SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA
Íñigo (Ignatius) López was born in the town of Loyola, now the municipality of Azpeitia, near San Sebastian, in the Basque Country, Spain, in 1491. From a wealthy family, the youngest of thirteen siblings, he decided to dedicate himself to spirituality at the age of 26, when he abandoned his military career, returning to study to better embrace his newly discovered vocation as an evangelizer. From 1522 to 1523, he wrote the Spiritual Exercises, based on his experience of encountering God through reflections that take into account his own humanity. The Spiritual Exercises later became a recognized method of evangelization for Catholics.
In 1534, with six companions, including Francis Xavier, he founded the Society of Jesus, which received approval from Pope Paul III in 1540, when Ignatius was chosen for the position of superior general of the order.
The Jesuits spread throughout the world. In Brazil, they played an important role in the conversion and protection of indigenous peoples during the colonial era, in addition to contributing decisively to education with colleges in various parts of the national territory that today are part of the Jesuit Education Network.
Saint Ignatius died in Rome on July 31, 1556, at the age of 65. In 1922, Pope Pius XI declared Saint Ignatius the patron of Spiritual Retreats.
